Help for submitting material to joburgmedia.net
Version 2, Aug 28, 2002
Joburg Media consists of a Media Pool and a News Portal. The Media Pool is meant to share and exchange material. The News Portal is meant to guide interested people (esp. journalists) through the news of the day.
You can submit:
- Files. These will always be placed in the Media Pool. All files in the Media Pool can be used by anyone. So any file you submit should be free of copyright. And of course the material should have a clear relation with the Johannesburg Summit.
When your material is very 'fresh' and covers important news, the Joburg Media editors will also put it on the News Portal and the Joburg-news E-mail maling list.
- Web links. If you produced or found an important web page about the summit, please submit the web address (URL) of this page. These links will also appear in the Media Pool. If the page carries important and recent news, the Joburg Media editors will also put it on the News Portal, which is a large collection of web links about the latest news from Johannesburg.
How to fill in the form?
* is a required field, you must fill this in.
- Date of event
(when did it happen)
Fill in the time and date the material it was issued or produced.
- Ending date
(if relevant)
Fill in the same date as above, unless you are submitting material about events with a time span, like an exhibition, a workshop, etc.
- Author or source
of the file/material
The writer or organisation who issues the material.
- Name of submitter
That's you. As many fields: optional.
- E-mail of submitter
And that is yours. This is filled in automaticly and can not be deleted. But do not worry, it is only shown when you or the editors work on your submission. It is not published.
- Contact
(telephone, address or E-mail)
Fill in someone who can be contacted about the content of the material.
- Nationality of author
Chose the country from the pull down list
- Background of Author *
(select only one)
Pick one possibility.
- Title
* (or description)
A (short) title for the submitted material.
- Summary
(to be published on the frontpage, so please make a good and attractive one)
Write or select a few lines describing what the material is about. This text is shown before people select your material.
- Keywords
Fill in a few keywords, separated with spaces. Do not use quotes (" or ') and do not use comma's (,). The keywords are used for searching, so think of words you would use yourself when you were searching for this material.
- Language of submission
Pick one language from the pull down list.
- File type
* (extension or encoding)
- Are you submitting a file? Please select the file type. People need to know this to use your file, so make sure you chose the right one. Do not select 'URL Link' if you are submitting (uploading) a file.
Please note: You can NOT submit Word files (*.DOC). This is not a good exchange format, the files are too large and could contain a virus. Load your DOC file in Word, choose 'File/Save As' and pick one of these: 'Text Document', 'Text files' or 'Plain Text' (*.TXT which can be read with any computer and be shown in any browser) or 'Rich Text Format' (*.RTF which has special characters, bold text, etc., can be read with many computers, but can only be shown in browsers with the right plug-in).
- Are you submitting a link to a web page? Then select 'URL Link'.
- Your File
(upload from your PC)
This is where you submit a file, do not use this field for a web link (URL).
This is where you really 'upload' your file, directly from your harddisk, (a text file, pictures, audio or video). Click the 'Browse' button on the web page and select the file to submit. Do not worry about security: Your PC is sending the file to us, nothing else is possible (besides you sending us a virus).
After selecting the file, check again: did you select the right 'File type' (no 13)?
Please note: The max. file size to upload is 5 megabytes. If you have bigger files, contact joburgnewsdesk@ddh.nl
- Thumbnail
(small version of an image, if you have one)
This is only used for submitting small pictures and logo's. You have to make a tumbnail yourself (about 150 x 100 pixels).
A bit more work, but people can already see a small picture with the information, without the need to download the large picture. Select the file with the 'Browse' button again.
- Web page URL
If you submit a web page, fill in the complete address here, including 'http://' at the beginning. Do NOT link to a general home page, but directly to a page with information around the Summit.
- Web page Title
(for when you submit both a file and an URL)
Do NOT fill this out if you submit a web page only! The title from '9. Title* (or description)' will be used automaticly when you only submit a web link.
Put a title for the 'Web page URL' here when you (1) submit a web link and (2) submit a file.
- Information type *
Pick the information category from the pull down list.
- Relevant sub-regions or continents
Select a continent and/or region.
- Topic(s)
Carefully browse this list and make the best possible selection. This is the most difficult part of your submission, but really helps to get good results from searching the Media Pool.
- Publish
You do not need to touch this, only the Joburg Media editors can change this.
- Editors note
This is also for the Joburg Media editors only.
- After filling in the form, click the 'Show' button.
The next page may be quite the same again, but in the top of the page will be an explanation about what you forgot. Correct this, scroll down and click 'Show' again. Sometimes you have to repeate this once more.
The last screen will show a 'Change' and a 'Confirm' button at the top. When you click on 'Confirm', your submission is added to the Media Pool.
Please note: You can always edit your own entry if you want to change something. You can do this later too, but you may need to log in again. So please register only once and keep your PIN code save.
Home You can close this window after use.
